How to develop outreach in a Local church
1 Ask your pastor for permission to create an outreach committee. The first step towards moving towards any goal is to decide what you wish to accomplish.
2. Work with church officials to publicize an initial outreach meeting where interested church members can meet.
3. Ask the people who attend the meeting to brainstorm ideas about reaching out to the community. Encourage attendees to toss out any ideas, no matter how far-fetch they may sound. You simply want to get creative juices flowing at that point. Place the ideas on a list.
4. Review the ideas and discuss them. For example, one member might suggest creating a program to help feed the homeless. Another member may suggest holding a well-publicized church event such a golf tournament, Christmas play or even a concert.
5. Ask the team to choose one idea to try. Starting with one allows focusing on a single task and directing all energy towards achieving it. When reviewing ideas, consider how much each one would cost to implement. Evaluate the idea's effectiveness as well. If the selected idea exceeds the church's budget or does not provide a tangible benefit, select another idea.
6. Outline the steps needed to execute the idea. For example, if the team chooses to tutor low-income students after school, define the steps you will take to set up facilities, locate tutors and perform related tasks. If the group decides to hold a movie night instead, brainstorm the tasks needed to acquire a movie, publicize the showing and obtain equipment. Once you have a tangible goal, each new step you take will generate new ideas as you see the outreach plan slowly unfold.
7. Execute the plan. After discovering, developing and outlining the idea, follow the steps in your outline. If you choose to develop an outreach plan to meet with prison inmates, execute the first step in your outline. For example, the first step might be to simply discover where the prisons are and speak with officials.
8. Track the progress of your outreach plan if it is a continuing task such as visiting the sick or passing out information. If it is a one-time event, such as hosting a business seminar or a community dinner, meet with the outreach team later to tackle another idea on the outreach plan list.
It remains my goal to provide to the body of Christ (Free of charge) information that will help you to seek funding beyond the pews, for together we stand but divide we fall.
